Chairman's Message

Chairman’s Message: Who’s Ready for the Next Decade?

January 1, 2020

I am pleased to have the honor of serving as the Chairman of the Destin Chamber for 2020, as we kick off the next decade. I follow many great leaders who have served in this role and want to thank them for their service and mentorship. To Julie Cotton, 2019 Chairman, thank you for leaving a strong legacy to follow…you created some big shoes to fill! To Shane Moody and the Destin Chamber team, I look forward to serving alongside you this year to lead the Chamber and the businesses we represent into a prosperous 2020. To our Board, I applaud you for being the visionaries in an effort to move the Chamber into a new decade. Last but not least, to my Hand Arendall Harrison Sale & Emerald Coast Title Services teams, my family, and my friends…thank you for the support and opportunity to serve in this role for 2020.

The collaborative efforts of the Destin Chamber are many – State, City, County, tourist development, economic development, educational institutions, nonprofits and businesses. Together we all strive to strengthen our community.

Just as our Chamber Mission states:  “Advocating for businesses… strengthening our community.”  Borrowing from our website: “The Destin Chamber prides itself on working to build successful businesses and a vibrant economy. The Chamber provides products and services to its member businesses helping them grow and prosper. The Chamber acts as the voice of business in government affairs. Governed by a volunteer board of directors and operated by a professional staff, the Chamber works daily to ensure that businesses have what they need to flourish. A strong base of volunteers assists in making sure that all of our programs are relevant to the needs of businesses.”

Our 2020 initiatives set forth by the Board, Chamber Staff and our members will focus on continuing to make Destin the best place to live, work and play.

  • We will continue to support pro-business initiatives at the City, County and State level. We want to engage our local stakeholders and strategic partners to help collaborate on issues important to the business community.
  • We want to enhance Chamber member engagement, which will include creating small group meetups, conducting periodic member surveys and focus groups, re-energizing the Young Professionals group, and conducting more events geared towards entrepreneurs and business owners, such as BizTech Spring/Fall forums and other seminars focused on entrepreneurship development.
  • We want to strengthen our workforce development initiatives, which will include working closely with the school district to host a Career Day in our area.
  • We will continue to focus on the military and tourism industries, so be sure to check out one of our MAC and/or Tourism Committee meetings throughout the year.
  • We will continue to provide special events for our members and strive to make them better.
  • Finally, we will continue to provide training and development through our Destin Forward leadership program, which has been very successful at grooming our next generation of community leaders.

With all we want to accomplish this year, we need your help!  We want you to be involved and stay involved. Your membership, participation, sponsorship and time will certainly help us to achieve our goals in 2020. Let’s continue the collaborative spirit we have in Destin and throughout Okaloosa County.

Cheers to an outstanding 2020, and the beginning of a new decade!
